Job Summary:
An Operating Theatre (OT) Technician is responsible for ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the operating theatre during surgeries and other medical procedures. They assist surgical teams by preparing the operating room, sterilizing instruments, maintaining equipment, and ensuring all necessary supplies are available. OT Technicians play a vital role in providing critical support to surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to ensure that procedures are carried out efficiently and with the highest standards of safety.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Preparation of Operating Room:
- Set up and prepare the operating theatre before each procedure, ensuring the room is sterile and equipped with necessary instruments.
- Verify that all equipment is functional, and set up appropriate surgical instruments and supplies.
- Maintain and organize the surgical instruments and ensure they are sterile before use.
2. Assisting During Surgeries:
- Assist the surgical team by passing instruments and supplies during the operation.
- Monitor and maintain the sterile field during surgery.
- Support the team by adjusting the patient’s position, as needed, ensuring comfort and safety.
3. Instrument Sterilization & Maintenance:
- Sterilize, clean, and store surgical instruments according to hospital protocols.
- Regularly check and maintain all surgical tools, ensuring they are in good working condition.
4. Inventory Management:
- Maintain an accurate inventory of surgical instruments, supplies, and medications.
- Ensure that all supplies are stocked, and replace or reorder materials before they run out.
5. Patient Safety:
- Ensure patient safety protocols are adhered to during surgeries.
- Monitor patient vital signs and alert the medical team to any concerns as necessary.
6. Equipment Handling:
- Set up and operate various surgical equipment, including electrosurgical units, monitors, and suction machines.
- Troubleshoot any issues with operating theatre equipment and alert technical staff when repairs are needed.
7. Post-Surgery Responsibilities:
- Assist in cleaning the operating theatre and preparing it for the next procedure.
- Disinfect and prepare all equipment for the next surgery, ensuring sterility is maintained.
8. Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of instruments used, sterilization procedures, and patient information as required by hospital policies.
- Report any discrepancies, malfunctions, or incidents during surgery to supervisors.
9. Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and other medical staff to ensure a coordinated approach to patient care.
- Participate in pre-surgery briefings and post-surgery debriefings to improve team performance.
Requirements:
- Diploma or Degree in Operation Theatre Technology, or related field.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required.
- Key Skills:
- Knowledge of surgical instruments and their usage.
- Understanding of sterilization procedures and infection control standards.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle stressful situations in a calm and effective manner.
- Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures.
- Experience:
- Previous experience in a hospital setting, especially in the operating theatre, is highly preferred.
- Fresh graduates with the required training and certification may also be considered.
Working Conditions:
- Shifts: Depending on hospital policies, OT Technicians may work in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Environment: The work environment can be fast-paced, requiring prolonged standing, lifting, and the ability to handle stressful situations.
- Physical Demands: The job involves standing for long periods, assisting in patient positioning, and occasional heavy lifting of medical equipment.
Career Advancement:
- With additional certifications and experience, OT Technicians can progress to roles like Senior OT Technician, OT Supervisor, or Operating Room Manager.
